1st try needle insertion
My first session, I was told to eat first and must have a good sleep, yet I wasn't informed that I must also drink a lot of water before the session until I already got to the nurse's house. It was okay since I have bottled water in my bag.

The first try of inserting the needle was scary and painful since the nurse fails to locate my veins, but the second try at my wrist was tolerable. the fluid stings a little since it has a higher dosage of Vitamin C. but you can just advice the nurse to add a little more water to your drip if your pain tolerance is low.

The drip took one and half hour. I feel numbness in my arms but still, it's tolerable.

After the drip, I only feel sore and numb where the first attempt failed and not the area where the drip inserted. I was advised to put ice to the affected area so it won't turn violet, I'm glad it worked.

2nd try and succeed

March 14,

Still feeling numb but I can already feel some force to use my left arm.

Still, no whitening effect, since it is just my first drip.
I feel asleep early than usual.
My mood is calm

March 15, 2019

Mood: Calm
No more numbness, I can only see a red spot from the needle insertion,

Siamese Fighting Fish (BETTA FISH)

Big fish in a small pond - or little fish in a small container?

The Siamese fighting fish, or betta, is a vibrantly-colored fish often seen swimming solo in brandy sniffers and ornamental vases in both the office and home. But do these small, aesthetically-pleasing fish bowls provide a healthy environment for the fish? Is the popular betta bachelor in need of a companion or is it better off living alone?

History

The betta was first discovered in Southeast Asia. Making its home in rice paddies, drainage ditches and the warm flood plains of the region, the betta became accustomed to frequent storm flooding and devastating droughts. The cyclic, drastic changes in its environment helped the fish to adapt - becoming a true labyrinth fish. A labyrinth fish has the unique ability to breathe oxygen directly from the air and also take in oxygen from its gills. As a result, bettas and other labyrinth fish can survive for short periods of time out of water and if needed, can inhale the air around them (provided they stay moist.) This also explains why a betta can sustain itself in stagnant, oxygen-deficient water. Although bettas can tolerate small spaces and poor water quality, they do best in small aquariums (at least two gallons) with regular water changes. The preferred water temperature for a betta is 76-82 degrees F.

What's in a name?

The betta got its name from an ancient clan of warriors, called the "Bettah." The fish were given a combatant name after the fighting fish became popular in the mid-1800s. In fact, the sport became so renowned in Thailand that the former King of Siam had it regulated and taxed! Spectators of the sport based their bets on the bravery of the fish, rather than the damage inflicted by the victor.

Dinner time

Bettas have upturned mouths and primarily feed on the water's surface. A good diet consists of dried bloodworms, brine shrimp or daphnia. Commercial betta food or pellets are best because it combines all three foods, in addition to vitamins and minerals. This improves the betta's brilliant coloring and longevity. It is a common misconception that peace lilies or plant roots grown out of "betta vases" can sustain the fish. Nothing could be farther than the truth! Bettas cannot survive on plant roots and need a diet high in protein and fiber to survive.

Roommate?

Bettas, unlike other species, are not schooling fish and will fight with each other, regardless of gender. Bettas prefer to swim alone and also need a comfortable place to hide. Aquatic caves or dense, planted corners work great in making a betta feel safe.

Water Quality

When cleaning a betta's tank or bowl, make sure you only take out a third of the water each time and replace it with fresh water. This will gently allow the fish to adjust to the temperature and pH of clean water - while not upsetting the biological balance of the fish's environment. This should be done about every three or four days for small bowls or tanks. If your water has a high level of chlorine in it, you may need to add a drop of declorinator to the tap water before adding it to the tank or bowl. And never use soap or disinfectants to clean off fish ornaments or decorations. This will harm the fish. Plain warm water will work just fine for cleaning these items. You can also use a small turkey baster to siphon debris from the bottom of the tank. This will prevent excessive ammonia and bacteria from building up.

Interesting betta facts

  • Bettas prefer slightly acidic water (pH 6.5 to 7) and warm water. Cold water can suppress the immune system and cause illness.
  • Bettas have several different tail shapes - the most common being the "veil tail." Other tail shapes include the "half-moon," "double tail," "short-finned fighting-style tail" and "crown tail."
  • Bettas normally live 2 - 3 years, but there have been a few cases of bettas living well into their teens.
  • The betta is known as "plakad" in its native Thailand and has often been referred to as "The Jewel of the Orient."

K-pop is rising, it became well known now around the globe. Every year there are new idols debuting. New handsome and pretty girls are becoming popular by synchronizing singing and dancing on stage.

Millennials especially in Asia are getting to attached to these Idols to the point that they can destroy a certain person who ever attacks thier "Oppa" (big bro/honey/sweetheart).

2018, the group BTS is still in the spotlight making a huge noise for the teenagers even for the elementary students.

Who are these young man the makes the heart of young girls beat to the extent of watching their music videos in loop, print and stick their faces everywhere and knows every inch of information about every Idol's life.

I don't know them so I did a brief research about BTS and why  millennial nowadays waste their time watching them.

"BTS (Hangul방탄소년단; RRBangtan Sonyeondan), also known as the Bangtan Boys, is a seven-member South Korean boy band formed by Big Hit Entertainment. They debuted on June 12, 2013 with the song "No More Dream" from their first album 2 Cool 4 Skool. They won several New Artist of the Year awards for the track, including at the 2013 Melon Music Awards and Golden Disc Awards and the 2014 Seoul Music Awards. The band continued to rise to widespread prominence with their subsequent albums Dark & Wild (2014), The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 2 (2015) and The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever (2016), with the latter two entering the U.S. Billboard 200.[3] The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever went on to win the Album of the Year award at the 2016 Melon Music Awards.[4]
Their second full album, Wings (2016),[5] peaked at number 26 on the Billboard 200, which marked the highest chart ranking for a K-pop album ever.[6] In their native South Korea, Wings became the best selling album in the Gaon Album Chart history at the time.[7] The album went on to sell more than 1.5 million copies, making it BTS' first "million seller",[8] and the group was subsequently awarded Artist of the Year at the 2016 Mnet Asian Music Awards.[9] The group's next release, Love Yourself: Her (2017),[10] debuted at number seven on the Billboard 200,[11] marking the highest rank for an Asian artist in history. The group also managed to debut on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time with the album's title track, "DNA", which entered at number 85 and peaked at number 67.[12] Another track from the album, "Mic Drop", was remixed by Steve Aoki with a feature by Desiigner and peaked at number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100. Both tracks went on to be certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America, a first for any Korean act ever.[13] The album sold over 1.2 million copies on South Korea's Gaon Album Chart in its first month, reclaiming its title as the best selling album in the chart's history and becoming the biggest selling Korean album by month in 16 years, coming second to G.o.d's album in 2001.[14] BTS was awarded the Mnet Asian Music Award for Artist of the Year for the second year in a row in 2017.[15] Their third full album Love Yourself: Tear (2018), debuted at number one on the Billboard 200,[16] making them the only K-Pop act to achieve this feat so far. Since their debut, they have sold an estimated 7 million albums worldwide.[17][18]

Known for their large social media presence, BTS were listed by Forbes as the most retweeted artist on Twitter in March 2016.[19] Following that, Twitter launched its first ever K-pop Twitter emoji featuring BTS in May.[20] In October 2016, Billboard placed BTS as number one on their Social 50 chart, making them the first Korean group to top the chart.[21] To date, they have spent 83 weeks as number one on the Social 50 chart.[22] That same year, they also charted on YouTube's Music Global Top 100: 17th on the video chart, 6th on the artist chart and 14th on the tracks chart.[23] In May 2017, they won the Top Social Artist Award at the Billboard Music Awards, becoming the first Korean group to win a BBMA.[24][25] In June 2017, Time magazine named the band one of the 25 most influential people on the internet.[26] On November 20, 2017 Guinness World Records revealed that BTS had earned a spot in their 2018 edition for "having the world's most Twitter engagements for a music group".[27] That December, they were revealed to be the most tweeted about celebrity in 2017, being "liked or retweeted over half a billion times (502 million)" worldwide, more than U.S. President Donald Trump and Justin Bieber combined.[28] BTS' achievements led the group to be ranked number one on Forbes Korea Power Celebrity list for 2018, a list ranking South Korea's most powerful and influential celebrities." - wikipedia.com

2010–2014: Debut and moderate success

Auditions for a possible boyband were held in 2010 and 2011 by Big Hit Entertainment, and the lineup went through several changes before it was finalized with Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook in 2012. Six months prior to their debut, they began to gain attention for their presence on various social media websites, as well as song covers on YouTube and SoundCloud.[35][36]
The group's debut single album 2 Cool 4 Skool, the first installment in their "school trilogy" series, was released simultaneously with its lead single "No More Dream" on June 12, 2013.[37][38] While the album peaked at number five on the Gaon Album Chart and sold over 105,000 copies,[39][40] "No More Dream" and the subsequent single "We Are Bulletproof Pt. 2" were not major hits.[41][42] Expanding their endeavors into Japan, "No More Dream" was later re-recorded in Japanese and released on June 4, 2014.[43]
The second part to the "school trilogy" was the extended play O!RUL8,2?, released on September 11, 2013, along with "N.O" as its single. The EP sold over 120,000 copies to date and peaked at number four.[44][45] That same month, BTS starred in their own variety show, SBS MTV's Rookie King Channel Bangtan, based on a fake broadcast station, "Channel Bangtan", through which members parodied variety shows such as VJ Special Forces and MasterChef Korea.Lee, Jung-hyuk (August 28, 2013). "방탄소년단, '신인왕 채널방탄'으로 리얼 버라이어티 도전" [Real Variety Challenge with 'Rookie King Channel Bangtan'] (in Korean). Sports Chosun. Retrieved July 20, 2018. At the end of the year, BTS was recognized with several New Artist of the Year awards, including the 2013 Melon Music Awards and Golden Disc Awards and the 2014 Seoul Music Awards.[46][47][48]
The last act to their "school trilogy", Skool Luv Affair (2014)[49] topped the Gaon Chart and sold over 200,000 copies.[50] It also peaked at number three on Billboard's World Albums Chart, marking the BTS' first release on the chart.[49][51] The album was supported by the singles "Boy in Luv" (Korean: 상남자; RR: Sang-namja) and "Just One Day" (Korean: 하루만; RR: Haruman).[52][53] That June, BTS participated as judges for a K-pop cover dance competition in the Bridge to Korea festival in Russia, an event that aimed to promote tourism between the two countries, where they also performed on stage.[54] In August, the group also attended KCON in Los Angeles.[55] That same month, they released their first Korean studio album, Dark & Wild, which peaked at number two on the Gaon Chart and sold over 200,000 copies.[56][57] It was supported by two singles: "Danger" and "War of Hormone" (Korean: 호르몬 전쟁, RR: Horeumon Jeonjaeng).[58]
Their Japanese studio album, Wake Up (2014), released that December, peaking at number three on the weekly Oricon Albums Chart and selling 28,000 copies.[59][60] Along with re-recorded Japanese versions of older songs, it also contained the original tracks "Wake Up" and "The Stars".[61] Their first concert tour, 2014 BTS Live Trilogy – Episode II: The Red Bullet, was held from October to December.[62]

2015–2016: Mainstream breakthrough and commercial success

At the beginning of 2015, BTS toured Japan for the first time with their Wake Up: Open Your Eyes tour.[63] They also held their second solo concert in Korea, BTS Live Trilogy – Episode 1: BTS Begins.[64] Their third EP, The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 1 (2015), was released that March[65] and was the only Korean album to be included in Fuse's list of the "27 Best Albums of 2015 So Far" that year.[66] The lead single "I Need U" was a top five hit on the weekly Gaon Digital Chart in South Korea[67] and garnered BTS their first ever music show win on SBS MTV's The Show.[68] Although the second single, "Dope (Korean: 쩔어; RR: Jjeoreo)", peaked at number 44 on the weekly Gaon Digital Chart,[69] its music video became BTS' first to accrue over 100 million views on YouTube in October.[70] "Dope" later peaked at number three on Billboard's World Digital Songs Chart.[71] The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 1 have sold over 300,000 copies to date.[72]
BTS' fourth Japanese single, "For You", was released that June to celebrate the first anniversary of their Japanese debut. The single topped Oricon's daily chart, selling over 42,000 copies within its first day.[73] They also commenced their 2015 Live Trilogy Episode: The Red Bullet world tour,[62] and participated in the Summer Sonic Festival tour in Japan.[74][75]
During their three-day The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: On Stage tour, the group performed the new song "Run",[76] the lead single for the EP The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 2 later released on November 30, 2015. The album topped the weekly Gaon Album and Billboard World Albums charts and remained atop the latter for multiple weeks, making BTS the first K-pop act to achieve that feat.[77][78] It also peaked at number 171 on the Billboard 200 Chart with over 5,000 copies.[79] At the 2015 Mnet Asian Music Awards, they received the Best World Performer in recognition of their international fanbase.
The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 1 and Part 2 were later combined into the Young Forever (2016) edition, and was supported by three singles: the top 40 hit "Epilogue: Young Forever", the top 10 hit "Fire" (Korean: 불타오르네; RR: Bultaoreune), and the top 20 hit "Save Me".[80] A two-day concert at the Olympic Gymnastics Arena in Seoul was held in May to support the album,[81] followed by their Asia tour.[82] The group also headlined both US KCON shows held that year in New Jersey (June) and Los Angeles (July), to sold out audiences.[83] Young Forever later won Album of the Year at the year-end Melon Music Awards, becoming the group's first major grand prize (daesang).[4]
On September 7, 2016, BTS released their second Japanese studio album Youth, selling over 44,000 copies on its first day of release and ranking number one in Japan.[84] Japanese editions of "I Need U" and "Run" were released as singles.[85][86] Meanwhile, back in their home country, pre-orders for the group's second Korean studio album, Wings, released that October, accumulated over 500,000 copies within the first week.[87] The lead single "Blood Sweat & Tears" achieved an "all-kill" in South Korea,[88] becoming their first number one hit on the weekly Gaon Digital Chart.[89] Its music video gained over 6 million views within 24 hours, breaking the previous record held on YouTube for the highest number of views of a K-pop group music video within 24 hours.[90] They later won Artist of the Year at the 2016 Mnet Asian Music Awards,[9] becoming the first artist not from a "Big Three" entertainment company (SM, YG and JYP) to do so.[91]

2017–present: International recognition

In early 2017, BTS embarked on their Live Trilogy Episode III: The Wings Tour. That February, pre-orders for the repackaged edition of Wings, entitled You Never Walk Alone, reached over 700,000 copies.[92] The lead single "Spring Day" (Korean: 봄날; RR: Bomnal) topped eight of the major South Korean online music charts, as well as Gaon,[93] and crashed Melon's digital chart due to the high influx of user traffic.[94] It also entered the US Billboard's Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart at number 15 with "zero promotions".[95]
Their fifth EP, Love Yourself: Her, was released that September[96] and featured music from The Chainsmokers' Andrew Taggart for the track "Best of Me".[97] The lead single, "DNA", peaked at number two on the weekly Gaon Chart,[98] while its music video reached over 20 million views on YouTube, breaking the record for most viewed K-pop group music video within the first 24 hours.[99] "DNA" also became the group's first entry on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 85, making BTS the first K-pop boy band to do so and the second Korean act with a Korean-language song.[100] When "DNA" rose to number 67, it became the highest-charting song on the Billboard Hot 100 for a K-pop group, beating Wonder Girls' previous record at number 76.[101] A remix for their song, "Mic Drop", by Steve Aoki and featuring Desiigner was released as the second single, peaking at number 23 in South Korea[102] and number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the first top 40 entry for a K-pop group on the chart.[103][104] "DNA" and "Mic Drop" were later released as a triple-A side single in Japan with the new song "Crystal Snow”[105] which topped the Oricon Chart,[106] becoming the highest-selling single from a K-pop artist within a week,[107] and making BTS the first foreign artist to achieve this.[108][109]
In November, the group became the first K-pop group to perform at the American Music Awards,[110] raising their profile internationally.[111][112] They won their second Artist of the Year at the 2017 Mnet Asian Music Awards,[113] becoming the first act to win the award two years in a row.[114][115] "Spring Day" later won Best Song of the Year at the Melon Music Awards.[116][117] That December, they performed on Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve to welcome the new year, making them the first K-pop group to be part of the show's lineup.[118] They also made their Japanese TV music show debut on TV Asahi's Japan Music Station Super Live on December 22.[119]
January 2018 saw BTS receive their first Double Platinum certification from the RIAJ for their "Mic Drop/DNA/Crystal Snow" single,[120] the only single album by a foreign artist in 2017 to sell over 500,000 copies and receive certification on the Oricon chart for that year.[121][122] Later that month, they became the first artist outside of the "Big Three" to win both grand prize (Daesang) awards at the Golden Disc Awards[123] and the Seoul Music Awards respectively.[124] In February, their "Mic Drop Remix" and "DNA" singles were both certified Gold[13] by the RIAA,[125] making BTS the first and only Korean artist to receive two certifications.[126] An original, eight-episode long documentary series, entitled Burn the Stage, that offers a behind-the-scenes look at the group's 2017 Wings Tour, premiered March 28 on YouTube Red and ran exclusively on the platform until May 9.[127][128] On April 4, their third Japanese studio album, Face Yourself, was released.[129] Its debut at number 43 on the Billboard 200 made it the third-highest-charting Japanese album in the history of the chart.[130] Later that same day, the group also released a nine-minute video titled "Euphoria", said to be the theme to Love Yourself: Wonder.[131]

On April 17, BTS were again nominated for Top Social Artist at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards,[132][133] which they later won on May 20, making them the only Korean artist to be nominated for and win the award two years in a row.[134][135] They made their debut as performers at the show, premiering their new single, "Fake Love",[136][137] from their third Korean-language LP, Love Yourself: Tear, released on May 18.[138] The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 with 135,000 album-equivalent units (including 100,000 pure album sales), becoming BTS' highest-charting and first number one album in the US, the first K-pop album to top the US albums chart, and the highest-charting album by an Asian act.[139][140][141] "Fake Love" peaked at number ten on the Billboard Hot 100 that same week, becoming the band's highest reaching song on the chart as well as their first in the top ten.[142] Overall, "Fake Love" is the seventeenth non-English song to reach the top ten, and the first for a K-Pop group.[143] The single also debuted at number seven on Billboard’s Streaming Songs chart with 27.4 million streams earned in the week ending May 24, giving BTS its first top ten on the chart and making “Fake Love” the first K-pop song to land on top ten since Psy’s "Hangover" feat. Snoop Dogg in 2014.[144] Love Yourself: Tear also reached number eight on the UK Albums Chart, marking the group's first top ten album in the country.[145] In June 2018, Time included BTS in the list of 25 most influential people on internet.[146][147]

What is (G6PD) Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency

Title:Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency (G6PD Deficiency)

Heading: Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency (G6PD Deficiency)

Sub-heading: What is G6PD Deficiency

Nurse: Hello everybody, have you ever heard of an inherited condition called Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency? It is also known as G6PD Deficiency in short or Favism. When taking certain drugs or foods such as fava beans or in contact with mothballs. People with G6PD Deficiency will develop acute haemolysis that is sudden damage of the red blood cells. In view of this the Department of Health provides a newborn screening programme for G6PD Deficiency. In order to find it out early and prevent health problems caused by damaged of the red blood cells. The Genetic Screening Unit of the Clinical Genetic Service under the Department of Health performs screening tests for babies born in hospitals under the Hospital Authority by testing the umbilical cord blood. For those babies born in private hospitals parents can consult their private hospitals, obstetricians or paediatricians for further information. Let us learn more about this condition by watching how a nurse counsels a couple with a G6PD Deficient baby.

Scene: Mrs Au's baby confirmed to have Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency. Nurse Tong from Genetic Screening Unit of Clinical Genetic Screening Service of the Department of Health counsel Mrs. Au through the phone.

Nurse Tong: Hello! This is Nurse Tong calling from the Genetic Screening Unit of the Department of Health. May I speak to Mrs. Au please?

Mrs. Au: Speaking, what's up?

Nurse Tong: Mrs. Au, congratulations on your new baby. Do you remember the Hospital has taken some umbilical cord blood from your baby for testing? Now we've got the result. Your baby is confirmed to have Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency, a condition commonly called G6PD Deficiency or Favism.

Mrs. Au: Oh, never. what's the problem with my baby? Is it serious?

Nurse Tong: Oh please don't get too worried.

Mrs. Au: Nurse Tong, could you explain a bit more about it?

Nurse Tong: Sure, G6PD Deficiency is the most common inherited metabolic disease in Hong Kong. It is also very common in Southern China. People with this disease do not have enough amount of an enzyme called G6PD in their red blood cells. This enzyme helps to keep red blood cells stable. Most affected people do not have any symptoms. When they are exposed to some Chinese or Western medicine, mothballs or have serious infection. Their red blood cells may be damaged in a large scale within a very short time. If this happens, large amount of haemoglobin will be broken down into excessive bilirubin (a pigment). This in turns overloads the liver and results in severe jaundice ( i.e. yellowing of the skin and the eyes).

Mrs. Au: It sounds serious. What can I do for my baby?

Nurse Tong: Try not to be too frightened. In fact, such a rapid breakdown of red blood cells can be prevented. People with G6PD Deficiency usually enjoy good health if they avoid exposing to certain triggers.

Mrs. Au: So, Nurse Tong, what should I do?

Nurse Tong: Starting from today you have to observe for any jaundice that is yellowing of skin of your baby. New born babies usually develops some degree of jaundice on 3 to 5 days after birth. This will gradually go away without affecting the health of the baby. On the other hand, if a baby with G6PD Deficiency is exposed to certain triggers that caused the breakdown of the red blood cells. The jaundice may appear on the first day after birth or at a later time. Moreover the jaundice may persist or even get worse.

Mrs. Au: What will happen to babies if jaundice persist and get worse?

Nurse Tong: Just as I've mentioned breaking down of the red blood cells produce a lot of bilirubin. This pigment can enter the brain of the new born baby causing long term brain damage like hearing loss, limp movement disorder and intellectual impairment etc. However with early detection and treatment the jaundice can be controlled effectively. So please do arrange an appointment with the Maternal and Child Health Centre as soon as possible to follow up your baby's jaundice.

Mrs. Au: So apart from jaundice, are there other symptoms I have to take note of?

Nurse Tong: The major symptoms include: yellowing of the white of the eyes and dark coloured urine. Besides, the baby may appear overly tired and sleepy. Older children may look pale and extremely tired. They may also complain of difficulty in breathing and heart beating rapidly. If the above symptoms are observed, you should consult the doctor immediately.

Mrs. Au: Just now you've mentioned that our baby should avoid exposing to certain triggers, so what are these triggers?

Nurse Tong: It's a very good question. People with G6PD Deficiency should remember to avoid the following things for their whole life: Firstly avoid the following Chinese herbal medicines such as Rhizoma Coptidis(Huang Lien) , Calculus Bovis (Neu Huang), Flos Chimonanthi Praecocis (Leh Mei Hua), Flos Lonicerae (Kam Ngan Fa) and Margaritas. Secondly Western medicine such as certain antibiotics, Antimalarials, Aspirin group Antipyretics. If used in high dose should be avoided as well. To make it simple all medicines should be prescribed by doctors. In order to avoid taking those drugs which can trigger red blood cell damage. Thirdly for food stuff, don't let your baby eat fava beans that is broad beans or their products such as fava pastry. Lastly for household products, avoid your baby in contact with mothballs or naphthalene-containing products. The above information is listed on the G6PD Deficiency card also known as green card and the leaflet on G6PD Deficiency produced by The Department of Health. Please keep this handy green card with you all the time

Mrs. Au: Nurse Tong, we haven't got the green card yet. How can I get it?

Nurse Tong: Don't worry. If you haven't received it from your hospital, we will post it to you in a few days. Finally remember to show this green card to your doctor and inform him your baby has G6PD Deficiency. Do you have any other questions?

Mrs. Au: Hmm, not now, thanks.

Nurse Tong: Should you have any other questions, you can call our hotline
2361 9979 or, ask the nursing staff or medical staff in the Maternal and Child Health Centres.

Scene: Mr Au and Mrs Au remove all triggers causing damage of red blood cells from their home.

Mr. Au: Mummy, I've followed nurse Tong's advice and removed all the food and products our baby should avoid. Like that Flos Lonicerae and Margaritas we've bought before. The mothballs inside our wardrobes have also been removed. I've also reminded grandma, grandpa and the maid not to use mothballs anymore. Oh, how about that Bo Ying Tan and insecticide? Should we dispose of them as
well?

Mrs. Au: Hmm, let's ask the nurse in the Maternal and Child Health Centre next time

Sub-Heading: Frequently Asked Questions

Scene: Mr Au and Mrs. Au bring their baby to Maternal and Child Health Centre for registration.

Nurse HO: Good morning Mr. and Mrs. Au. I'm Nurse Ho. I've just checked your baby's jaundice. It's not very high, so you don't need to worry. Today, it's your first visit to our centre. Do you have any questions about taking care of your baby?

Mrs. Au: Nurse Ho my baby has G6PD Deficiency, can I continue breastfeeding him?

Nurse HO: In general, you can continue breastfeeding your baby. However, if you need to take those medicines or Chinese herbal medicines stated on the green card. You have to stop breastfeeding temporarily to prevent passing those medicine to the baby via the milk. Meanwhile it's better that you continue to express breastmilk to maintain milk supply. In that case you can continue breastfeeding after stopping those medicines.

Mrs. Au: Nurse Tong of the Genetics Screening Unit told me that people with G6PD Deficiency should avoid certain Chinese herbal medicines and Western drugs. Can my baby take those Chinese folk medicine like Bo Ying Tan and traditional milk supplement for babies indigestion?

Nurse HO: Indeed, parents should not give medicine to their babies without any doctor's prescriptions. As the Bo Ying Tan contains Calculus Bovis and Margaritas, we should not give this to babies with G6PD Deficiency. The ingredient of over the counter herbal supplement for babies indigestion varies greatly. It's better to avoid giving this to babies. If there really is a need, you should seek advice from a qualified Chinese medicine practitioner.

Mrs. Au: Besides the food mentioned in the green card, is there any other food that my baby should avoid?

Nurse HO: Whenever you buy anything, you should check ingredients for any triggers stated on the green card. For example certain brands of vermicelli and mixed beans may contain fava beans. If you are not sure check with the manufacturer or doctor directly.

Mr. Au: We have to avoid using mothballs, but how about camphor?

Nurse HO: According to the latest research findings, natural camphor will not trigger breakdown of red blood cells in people with G6PD Deficiency. However the purity of camphor containing products in the market varies. Therefore it is better not to use them.

Mr. Au: Can we also use scented aroma, fabric softener and insecticide?

Nurse HO: Except those triggers mentioned in the green card, there is no current evidence showing that aroma, fabric softener, food or products containing menthol, chamomile tissue and diapers, insect repellents, mosquito coil and medicated oil etc can damage the red blood cells in people with G6PD Deficiency. However you should check the ingredients before using them. Should you have any doubts, you'd better consult the manufacturer or your doctor.

Mr. Au: If a baby with G6PD Deficiency, does not have any problems after eating the food which should be avoided. Can he eat that food in the future?

Nurse HO: Even though a baby with G6PD Deficiency has no adverse effect after taking those food that may trigger haemolysis. You shouldn't let your baby eat them again. The degree of damage to the red blood cells depends on other factors like the person's health condition and the amount of triggers exposed to. Therefore for safety's sake, the baby should avoid taking those foods for their entire life.

Mr. Au: When he goes to school, is there any problem if his classmate's uniform has a mothball odour?

Nurse HO: It's common that the uniform of classmates carries odour of mothballs. However the dose of mothballs is much lower and it would not lead to haemolysis. If your child smells the odour of mothball, he'd better get away from it. More important is the affected person and their caregiver should not use mothballs for their clothes. Do you have any other questions?

Mr. Au: No, that's very clear already. Thank you for your explanation.

Nurse HO: Please remember to come to our workshop on G6PD Deficiency next month.

Sub-heading: Inheritance of G6PD Deficiency

Scene: A group of parents attending the G6PD workshop in Maternal and Child Health Centre

Nurse Ho: Good morning parents. I am Nurse Ho. Welcome to today's workshop on Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency, a condition commonly called G6PD Deficiency or Favism. Today I'll focus on the inheritance pattern of the condition and answer some of your questions. Do you know that G6PD Deficiency is the most common metabolic disease in Hong Kong? Around 4.5% of baby boys and 0.5% of baby girls in Hong Kong have G6PD Deficiency.

Dad A: Nurse Ho, my wife and I do not have G6PD Deficiency. why does our son have it?

Nurse Ho: G6PD Deficiency is an X-linked recessively inherited condition. X-linked means that gene responsible for this condition is on the X chromosome one of the sex chromosomes. Being recessively inherited it means that not all generations will have this disease. Boys only have one X chromosome. When this carries the gene, he will get G6PD Deficiency. On the other hand, girls have two X chromosomes. Therefore, if only one of her X chromosome carries the G6PD Deficiency gene and the other X chromosome is normal. She will only be a carrier of the gene, but with no disease. If both of her X chromosome carry this gene, she will get G6PD Deficiency. That is why most of the people with G6PD Deficiency are males. In your situation you do not have the G6PD Deficiency. But your wife is likely a carrier of the gene.

Dad A: So, if we have a baby in the future, will that baby inherit G6PD Deficiency?

Nurse Ho: If mother is the carrier of G6PD Deficiency and father is unaffected. For each pregnancy, there is a 50% chance that a son will have G6PD Deficiency and 50% chance being unaffected. If the baby is a daughter then there will be 50% chance that she will be a carrier of the deficient gene and the rest will not be affected.

Mum A: My son has G6PD Deficiency. If he gets married in the future, will his children inherit the
same condition?

Nurse Ho: For people with G6PD Deficiency their children may or may not inherit the condition. It depends on the genes of their partners. If the father is G6PD Deficient and mother is unaffected. Then for each pregnancy all sons will not be affected. While all daughters will be carriers of the deficient gene. If the father is G6PD Deficient and mother is a carrier of the gene. Then for each pregnancy there is a 50% chance for a son to be G6PD Deficient and 50% chance he will be unaffected. On the other hand there is a 50% chance for a daughter to be G6PD Deficient and the rest will be a carrier.

Mum B: What about my daughter? She has G6PD Deficiency. Will her baby have the condition?

Nurse Ho: If the mother is G6PD Deficient and father is unaffected. Then for every pregnancy all sons will be G6PD Deficient. All daughters will be carrier. In addition, pregnant ladies should inform their doctor about her family history of G6PD Deficiency for antenatal counseling. Although there are no preventive measures for the condition during pregnancy. Early detection and with the right precaution can protect babies from any harm caused by acute haemolysis.

Dad B: In this case, does my baby need regular blood testing and follow up consultation?

Nurse Ho: Provided that people with G6PD Deficiency can ensure lifelong avoidence of the food stuffs and products mentioned in G6PD green card, it is not necessary to have regular blood taking or follow up consultation.

Dad A: I have one more question. If my child grows up and his immunity becomes stronger. Can he recover from this disease?

Nurse Ho: G6PD Deficiency is an inherited disease, it is not the problem of the immune system. Therefore the baby will not outgrow this with age or when his immunity is stronger. If babies with G6PD Deficiency can avoid exposure to triggers. They can lead a healthy and active life as other children. Therefore, please always take with you the green card and inform medical staff about the G6PD Deficient status of your baby during consultation. Also, let your child know that he has the condition and teach him to take precautions to the food or products mentioned on the green card. Do you have any other questions?

All parents: No, thank you very much.

Scene: Mr. Au and Mrs. Au return home after the workshop

Mr. Au: Mummy please don't put the green card on the sofa. Have you forgotten what the nurse has said? We should always bring the green card with us. In addition we have to bring along this card during every consultation.

Mrs. Au: Oh, sorry. Could you put the green card in my hand bag please?

Mr. Au: Okay

Nurse: After watching this scenario, you should understand more about G6PD Deficiency. Let's go over the main points
  1. Children should avoid exposing to triggers of haemolysis that is damage to red blood cells.
  2. Should there be any signs and symptoms of acute haemolysis, please consult doctor immediately.
  3. Always bring along with you the G6PD Deficiency card.
  4. Inform medical staff that your baby has G6PD Deficiency during consulatation
  5. Let the child understand G6PD Deficiency at the earliest possible age.
  6. Teach him to avoid food and products which can trigger haemolysis.
Although G6PD Deficiency will not be recovered when the child grows up. If the affected person can pay attention to the above precautions, he can also enjoy good health like other children.
